Marathon County Literacy Council was founded in October of 1997. The Council represented a cross section of literacy providers, educators, and interested community members throughout Marathon County. Marathon County Literacy Council (MCLC) was created with a Board of Directors established in July 1998.
August of 2002, The MCLC established a new, more centrally-located office in the downtown library of Wausau. This helped the Council expand its tutor base, update its tracking of student outcomes, and become more accessible to the community.
The Council then was combined with Wood County Literacy Council to form the Central Wisconsin Literacy Council (CWLC) in 2011.
The Councils having working together found the area of coverage was too large for one and agreed to separate, back to its own. In 2017, The Marathon County Literacy Council re-established itself as the new nonprofit, McLit - Marathon County Literacy.
