AmeriCorps Volunteers

Taylor, McLit's 2022 Americorps volunteer, is pictured.

Meet Taylor, McLit's AmeriCorps volunteer for 2022!

My name is Taylor and I am working at McLit this summer through AmeriCorps. I am currently pursuing a major in Creative Writing and a minor in Psychology at Lawrence University, and I was drawn to McLit's love of reading, language, and learning. I am also an author, self-publishing my first novel in December 2021, and I hope to continue to develop my craft through the skills I am learning at McLit. When my nose isn't in a book, you'll find me playing softball and volleyball with my university teams, working our student newspaper, engaging with the Lawrence Christian Fellowship, and spending time with my family and friends.

Ligia, McLit's Americorps volunteer since 2021 is pictured.

Meet Ligia, McLit's AmeriCorps volunteer for 2021!

My name is Ligia Pineda, and I am a Guatemalan and a United States citizen, a mother of three girls, and a grandmother of a little girl. As a bicultural person, I went through the acculturation

process. When my children were little, I consciously decided to pass on my culture and the Spanish language to them. At the same time, I went to school and obtained my bachelor’s degree in human services. I gained lots of experience working in the community as a Domestic abuse advocate, teachers aide, bilingual translator, and an Americorps volunteer. My first

Americorps term was full time at the Wausau School District as a teachers aid, and my second term was part time at McLit of Wausau as a tutor. I really enjoyed serving and working at McLit, a unique non-profit organization that enriches people's quality of life. The fact that their main goal is to focus on individual needs and works one to one is a reason for their success with the learners. My duties at McLit were mainly tutoring English language learners, helping individuals with the immigration process, teaching civics and history for the citizenship exam, and participating in all events and programs for McLit and for the community in general. If you see me now I am a full time grandma passing along my heritage and helping people in the community. Please talk to me if you think you have a passion for people, I will share all I know about Americorps, and how to join the program!
